PANTANAL THREE DAYS

Day 1: Daily departures from Cuiabá at about 7:30a.m. for Poconé 100 km from Cuiabá via the paved BR 070 highway. At around 9:00a.m. we arrive at the town of Poconé, which is considered the gateway to the Northern Pantanal. About ten kilometres after Poconé, we reach the gate of entry into Pantanal National Park, at which point the Transpantaneira, a packed dirt road, begins and we partake in a photo safari of such animals as giant otters, deer, capybaras, alligators, anacondas, savannah hawks, black-collared hawks and crested caracaras. We will arrive around 11:30a.m. at your chosen lodge to check into our rooms. A typical regional lunch will be served at 12 noon. In the afternoon, around 3:30p.m., we will board a boat so as to enjoy a photo safari on the river for three hours and observe the wildlife. In the early evening we will return to our lodge and after dinner, we will take a night safari by car to observe the behaviour of the fauna and flora and to spot nocturnal animals such as raccoons, foxes, tapirs, deer, capybaras, the pauraque bird (nightjar) and other wildlife in the Pantanal in the dark. Return to lodge and overnight.

Day 2: At 5:00a.m, before the sunrise, we will take a hike into the jungle to look for more nocturnal and diurnal animals, such as monkeys, tapirs, deer, South American coatis, agoutis, rabbits, capybaras, yellow armadillos, frogs, Jabiru storks, maguari storks, great ibis, limpkins, roseate spoonbills, toco toucans, parrots, muscovy ducks and hyacinth macaws. Then we will climb a tower to watch the sunrise. We will return to the lodge for breakfast and then drive on to our second lodge, arriving around 10:00a.m. to check into our rooms. We will have lunch at 12:30p.m. At around 3:30p.m., we will have a three-hour horse ride over the open grasslands and woodlands to places that are difficult to reach on foot. We will be looking for anteaters, tapirs, iguanas, golden tegu and plants used in the Pantanal such the yellow trumpet tree (Tabebuia aurea benth). Its Portuguese name paratudo means “for everything” and stems from the fact that, in herbal medicine, it is used, literally, as an all-encompassing remedy for fever, malaria, diabetes, worms, and gastric problems. The Pantanal is rich in medicinal plantlife. After sunset we will return to our lodge for dinner, after which we will enjoy another night safari and look for ocelots, tapirs and other animals.

We will return to the lodge, where you can take a swim in the swimming pool. Lunch will be around 12:00 noon. Around 3:30pm we will return to Cuiabá arriving around 6:00p.m. If you have a flight in the afternoon, we can return from the Pantanal sooner.
